Tiffany lamps: Brilliant Piece Of Artwork

When we think of tiffany lamps the first think that strikes our mind is its vibrant colors, bejewelled, dragonfly design stained glass lampshades. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the man who created tiffany lamp. He was an American and son of a New York jeweller, Charles Tiffany. He took advantage of the electrical era with the vibrant artistic movement called Art Nouveau. He was in Europe at the time when the movement was reaching its full development and it profoundly affected his creative ideas and influenced his artwork.

He was very clever and created a new sparkling stained glass in a whole spectrum of peacock colors which was the perfect medium for softening and diffusing the barrenness of electric light.

Louis Comfort Tiffany with his new innovative design created a masterpiece using different shades of color and light and implemented them together in such a way that the end result was magnificent. Collection of lamps fashioned from glass and metal was just breath taking.

The lamps where created were made purely by very skilled craftsmen and were very expensive and an item of luxury which cost around hundred dollars. It was a must have items that wealthy Americans desired to own. Using the blown glass technique and experimenting around, he created lot of good designs. He employed many craftsmen’s and glassblowers to help him make unique lamps that was adored and appreciated by everyone.

Tiffany used to experiment and generate new ways for designing coloured glasses. He used a method in which reheated glass was sprayed with a vaporized solution of salts of tin or iron. This spray was absorbed by the molten glass and gave layers of reflecting colours when it was cooled to room temperature. The lamps designed with these glass sheets gave excellent looks and colour glow in the rooms.

Tiffany’s indigenous technique for producing coloured glasses was magical and quite effective. He designed different colours by using different metal vapours. The copper vapour spray resulted in greenish blue to a rich ruby red and the cobalt vapour produced a spectrum of blue shades and if mixed with manganese it gave the black colour. Glass colour variation was even done by changing the furnace conditions and temperatures.

Dragonfly, peacocks, wisteria, water lilies etc are some of the most famous designs of tiffany lamps which are very famous and almost loved by everyone. Earlier these lamps use to cost a fortune but with time you can find many cost effective lamp shades with are reproduction pieces that have captured the style of that period really well.
