When we think of tiffany lamps the first think that strikes our mind is its vibrant colors, bejewelled, dragonfly design stained glass lampshades. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the man who created tiffany lamp. He was an American and son of a New York jeweller, Charles Tiffany. He took advantage of the electrical era with the vibrant artistic movement called Art Nouveau. He employed many craftsmen’s and glassblowers to help him make unique lamps that was adored and appreciated by everyone.

Tiffany used to experiment and generate new ways for designing coloured glasses. He used a method in which reheated glass was sprayed with a vaporized solution of salts of tin or iron. This spray was absorbed by the molten glass and gave layers of reflecting colours when it was cooled to room temperature. The lamps designed with these glass sheets gave excellent looks and colour glow in the rooms.

Tiffany’s indigenous technique for producing coloured glasses was magical and quite effective. He designed different colours by using different metal vapours. The copper vapour spray resulted in greenish blue to a rich ruby red and the cobalt vapour produced a spectrum of blue shades and if mixed with manganese it gave the black colour. Glass colour variation was even done by changing the furnace conditions and temperatures.
