What is a WORM? Actually it is a computer program, which can self reproduce and it uses computer networks to send its copies to other computers within the same network or though internet causing damages to the infected computer or to the network. Worms as different than Viruses because normally a Virus needs to have a host computer and it will be attached to the boot sector or to the host file to be executed, but for the worms it can reproduce by itself and spread independently without detecting to the users of the targeted computers.
There are worms created with good intent such as Xerox PARC created a worm called Nachi family worms which helps to download and install patched from Microsoft web sites to fix the problems and vulnerabilities of the host system. Even though this was very helpful it causes great deal of slowness of the host system by creating network traffic. So this way even though these were created with good intent, still it can cause troubles to the computers or to the host systems.
In order to prevent Worm attacks uses have to be very vigilant on their operating systems and should be very careful when opening unknown mails as recently a similar worm “I LOVE YOU” caused much destruction to many computers around the globe. So it is essential to be vigilant. Since most of the operating systems have latest Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs, users has to keep those programs up and running with latest updates. This way user can close the gates for the malwares such as Worms.

Most worms can cause large network traffic and sometimes cause severe damages to even boot sectors by deleting critical files or stopping them working.  Worms can be best avoided by refraining opening the attachments of unknown e-mails which can come to your mail by saying something very similar to your day today activity. If you receive suspicious mail with an attachment, first thoroughly check whether it is exactly the mail which you should receive. This way user can avoid opening the mail and immediately discard it stopping worm on boarding the system.
